At first glance in the article they appeared to comply with regs, arent the regs 3 hours max? They switched planes, deplaned and boarded a second plane. The passengers were on one plane for 3 hours and the other less than that. Horrible situation and AA is to blame but just wanted to clarify.

Good point. The swapping of planes would have definitely satisfied the requirement for the first part of the delay. 3 hours is the limit. Food and water have to be offered after 2 hours. The “comfortable cabin temperatures” part of the reg might be the biggest quip.
