Unrealized losses driven by a market decline are meaningless. This shouldn't even be a headline in the same way that the eventual recovery wouldn't be worth one.

Nah, frick that. The current shareholders have the right to know the current value of their investments. Reporting of unrealized losses is very important to understand the short-term and long-term viability of a company.
