Young players on rookie deals are like new cars… the value you get for them decreases the second you draft them unless they become superstars.

Value we get now, while he has a cost controlled season left and would convey RFA rights / Bird rights, is more than his value at the deadline or his value next offseason barring a massive spike in value due to his play.

If we don’t see him making the kind of step up he needs to in order to get a new contract from us, we need to get value now rather than get lowballed at the deadline or play chicken on an RFA tender.
