The problem you run into once a mental health screening is law is that the parameters change over time with the screening. With democrats in charge they could very easily say for instance if you were at the Jan 6 rally you are unstable and shouldn’t own a gun. Slippery slope in my opinion.

This is EXACTLY what would happen. Pretty much anyone who has a voter ID with "Republican" on it would be deemed a threat.
Same thing if the left got their way and they could confiscate firearms. They won't go to the ghetto where the vast majority of murders take place. Nope. Those are their voters and foot soldiers. They would hit suburbs in red states first.
