Is it worth it to drive from the Prairieville/Gonzazles areas or should I look for something closer?
Absolutely look for something closer. Housing gets more expensive in that area, but there are still plenty of options.
If you are going to grad school, you won't have time to burn 2 hours a day in traffic, and you will be expected to be on time every day. Look off Suma, Perkins, or Jefferson. Basically look in south East Baton Rouge as close to the hospital as you can.
I sincerely wouldn't move to Ascension Parish unless I really needed good public schools. It doesn't sound like you are in that stage in life right now.

Man stop this hyperbole. My GF and I live down 74 just across the Gonzales Line(farther than Geismer/Pville). She works on Perkins and drives past OLOL every day. Most days her drive is 35 minutes each way.
If he lives near 73@I-10 and works at OLOL, he can expect a 30 minute commute. Shorter if he goes in a 7am and leaves a 3pm.
