Looking for a charter for lobster diving opening weekend in the keys. This would be for the regular season, not the mini season. Anyone have any recommendations or done this before?

The Flower Gardens reef? We've dove and caught lobsters there before but damn that's a long ways out there.

Bull,
Google fishing/lobster charters in the Keys and I bet you will get a bunch of hits. Some of those guys will charter for that too, not just fishing. I think it was Two Conchs I saw on their fishing show a few weeks ago that they were taking groups out to do it in Marathon.

I went once almost 20 years ago and it was a blast. Went with a friend's dad who had been going down for probably 25 years and he had all kinds of rocks, ledges, etc marked all over the place. We would be in 5-6' of water and he would stop on his mark, drop anchor then we would hop out and find some little small ledge and see lobster antenna sticking out all over the place. It was a pretty damn cool trip.

Having grown up in the lower Keys free diving for lobster is not for the unfit. Two to three minutes below at a time makes for a challenging experience. Even if you're diving bomb holes on the flats.

The first thing you should do is get certified SCUBA.

The second thing you should do (after locating your guide) is adhere strictly to the law. FL Marine Patrol are everywhere and serious about enforcement. I've never known anyone to get off with a hand slap. Personally, I learned the hard way. $500 fine for three lobsters back in 1983 a day before season opened.

Have fun.
