There are a lot of locally owned restaurants but to be honest I eat out lunch everyday and go upscale at night so someone else may chime in and may have better choices based on what you are looking for.

You will find great food here. Fact. there are more but off the top of my head....

Crawfish Time, Cajun Table are close to River ranch and will have boiled crawfish and seafood
Mandez Seafood - casual seafood close to the Cajun dome
Dwer's Cafe - nice affordable plate lunch downtown
Bon Temp Grill - on Pinhook has had some good food and may have that Sunday brunch
La Pizzeria (casual)and IMonelli and Marcello'a (both upscale) has good Italian too

Short day trip:
A trip out to Avery Island to tour the Tabasco Factory and the Jungle Garden would be great for be a good half day in April. If the azalea's are in bloom its a real treat. Could then catch lunch down the road at Jefferson Island if open or From there you could also hit the eat lunch or dinner in the Abbeville area, Dupruy's, Shucks or Riverfront. (there is also a seafood restaurant called Poor Boy's Riverside in Broussard that has good seafood)
