So question… were they expected to stop competing once they paired off and married?

The men would tell the wife if she was getting fat and she should work on that.

Guys are scared to do that now as they are not men and they are afraid of losing half their shite.

My father was not afraid to tell mother if she was eating too much. She never got fat and still eats like a bird.

Was just trying to think how many fat broads were in my HS class of 87 and I can only think of one. Class of 150 students.

At the ten year reunion I didn't recognize her as she slimmed down and frankly looked damn good. Had a successful husband as well.

Can only recall one fat guy in the same class.

Our legal system now says if a guy says this to a wife, the wife can leave, take half his stuff, dramatically reduce his access to spend time with his children, social media will shame him, and the woman knows if single mom life (which is glorified) gets too hard, the government and/or another man (or woman) will bail her out.

Your mother had no ability or safety net to leave your father.

Different times.
