I don't know if you can really call Pink Floyd progressive. They came from the space rock branch of the tree. Yes they have ethereal sounds and evocative lyrics but the songwriting isn't particularly challenging, which is a hallmark of progressive rock.
Note...that doesn't mean it isn't fantastic, it is. I like to thing of Pink Floyd as in a genre of their own. They're singular. No one sounds like them, and they sound like no-one else. Gilmour/Waters is clearly one of the great teaming in rock music history. We may never see another like it again.
The production values are off the charts. You can hear Alan Parson's touch all over the music.
It's really a shame that "prog" somehow is now a metal genre. Theres really no connection to the earlier generations of progressive music. Progressive music embraced all kinds of musical styles whole heartedly. Folk, Canterbury, Fusion, World, Jazz, even county in some places. It takes a bit more than whizzing through arpeggios in 13/8 to make it progressive...but I guess it is "prog".
