The GMEX coin was airdropped at a given price which is all classified as capital gains and you will need to pay taxes. The Devs didn't think that one through good enough.
You could sell the original GME is there is any liquidity (i would have done that right after the fork) and take those losses to offset the airdropped GMEX.

Add that to taxes being owed on the $100k in your example, and it is a bad deal for a lot of people. It's sad.
I can't wait to see what happens after the first. If I was one of those people taking the tax advice that was being given out by people in the telegram group, which was that trust wallet doesnt send out records, I'd wait till after the first to sell. That way, I can push playing dumb off till april 2023.

A lot of those people were putting real money in it too. This wasn't a throw 2 bnb at a shitter type buy for a lot of people. Unfortunately, a lot of those people will not be in crypto long after getting burned on their first one.
There's going to be some pissed off friends and family over the next few months.
