the REAL point is how much would being in the SEC be worth to your school per year vs staying in your current conference per year.
I think this is valid. And hypothetically, should the SEC dance the dance with an ACC school and the $20mil buyout becomes the dowry, who is responsible for the payment of that amount? If only the ACC bride, then what you ask is truly important - it might be more economically sensible and possibly even lucrative for that bride to stay in her current conference. And leave the SEC flirtations alone. If the SEC becomes responsible for the $20 million, or even part of it, that is still another ticket price increase in the making for all us fans.

How do you grossly overrate $20 million dollars?? Or say, "just" $7 million??

Consider this... if as you say that extra $7 million or the whole $20mil is picked up by the SEC schools as you so casually posit, may I ask where these SEC schools are going to get that kind of cash? The sports program budget, you say? Ok, but where does that revenue come from? One of the sources is ticket prices. And who pays the ticket prices? Fans. And to make up a budget that is suddenly responsible for a part of that big sum, how will the schools handle that item? Ticket price increases. Probably. And who will pay those increases ultimately? You will, or I will, if we buy tickets. But when will too much already, really be too much?

That suggestion - for each SEC school to chip in 500K - would come from scheduling one FCS rent-a-win extra (around 500K less than most FBS non-AQ opponents these days). The fan will not pick up a dime in this case but will have to endure one more home game versus a Nicholls State rather than a Troy.

And if that helped you get VA Tech, the schools will make a fortune back in return. Why? The inevitable SEC Network, which will bring in millions of dollars of year in the state of Virginia alone from cable subscribers. Without an SEC team in the state, an SECN would pull in millions less per year.

Oh goody! I love going to non-contests and paying premium prices. But I suppose the bean counters will have their day. And at the end of that day, I'd be happy with VT or FSU or Clemson or UNC. Although I do think WVU is a diamond (if maybe in the rough).

I guess the drama will just have to play itself out.
