UT/TAMU Split...What's the big deal??

Why are UT and TAMU scared to be in different conferences?
It's not like they can't play each other every year a la UF/FSU.
Is the effect conference affiliation may have on recruiting really THAT big of a deal?

The real reason is that Texas politicians act like this is kickball and everyone has to be picked up the same conference or nobody is playing

Its like A&M always have to follow big brother

Yes. In their minds it is. Or at least UTs minds. They would like to stay the big fish in the pond. If TAMU splits, their control is greatly jeopardized. At least imo.

there's alot of financial/political ties that extend beyond just football & recruiting
if they go in different directions, they're going to wish they had signed a pre-nup

I think it would finally give them a chance to step out of Texas's shadow, even if just a little bit. They would seemingly have a leg up on UT, at least in terms of conference affiliation.
Another issue might be that if they split up, in order to play each other every year, it would take up one of UT's out of conference games.

Good observation. A&M will pay a big price politically. If they are willing to pay it, go for it.

The rumor up here is that Texas is threatening to never play A&M again in any sport if they go to the SEC.

Many things have changed over the last forty years.
UT is a Cal-Berkley type UNI and A&M is much more conservative.
UT use to have access to 100% of the PUF (oil funds left to the University that made it one of the richest in the universe).
A&M was a male only institution and fought the government like hell before giving in and taking females. That led to an enrollment explosion, a bit of muscle in state government and access to 1/3 or UT's PUF puddle.
There is some question now as to whether or not those funds can be retained if A&M doesn't follow the lead.
I have no idea how the Texas legislature is made up these days but the governor is an aggie.

KLBJ right now....
"lets face it....who are you going to beat? If you join the SEC, you're going to get your teeth kicked in every week"
he's also stating that this Texas/PAC10 TV contract will be bigger than the SEC's.....I'd have a hard time believing it's going to be much more attractive

Most people would just tell TX to stick it where the sun dont shine when they are talked down to like that. Not really great business tactics there.

Two sportswriters have reported UT, OSU, OU, and TT will not schedule A&M in any sport for a very, very long time....

An aggie who has his balls in a vice grip by UT friendly congressmen. Also don't forget that he has to keep the voters happy. I don't think he'll be of much use to them in this situation.

Not an attorney but isnt that some type of conspiracy or restraint of trade?

Even if it is, it will take a helluva lot more than a couple of sportswriters to make the case. There are a dozen legit reasons not to schedule a team. If A&M sues to force TT and UT to play them, talk about a ton of shite coming down on the Aggies from all sides.
The Gov is in for a tough race with the former Houston mayor and is making sure everyone knows he's staying out of this catfight.

At some point you have to live your own life. It's TAMU's time IMO. Time to tell UTx to jamb it and start building their own rep. That's how I would feel if I were an Aggie. I mean, being led around like a puppy dog has got to get old.

Aggie should tell them to stick it.
If they come to teh SEC and get a rivalry going with LSU and Alabama and can win the SEC, they can play those pansies in the BCS and own them after playing tough competition all year long.
Then UT and OU will have to deal with a strong SEC A&M....I don't buy all of this "they'll get destroyed in the SEC" talk.
If they are the only Texas team in the SEC, they will recruit much, much better and be in a position to have a championship-caliber program while Texas and OU jerk off Oregon and UCLA.....
