If we get both the conference improves and there is no combination of other teams that could rival that conference.
But why take A&M, clemson, or Florida State? Just a bunch of teams who only expand the middle of an already good conference top to bottom. They do not enhance the conference just add more teams to the middle.

If the pac 16 comes about how does that hurt the SEC? The only big names moving are OU and Texas and that makes the pac 16 a decent conference, but top to bottom no better than the SEC.

USC (pre probation), Texas, and OU would be elite SEC teams. That would be they would be on the same level as Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, and UT. The only team that would make any sense to add on its own merit would A&M to get us into the Texas tv market.

I think taking TCU or USF would be savvy moves that would dilute the recruiting power of non-SEC schools such as TX, OU, FSU, & Miami.

I agree that it wouldnt make much sense to pick up GT or Clemson because they wouldnt give us more national contenders just more solid teams in TV markets we already occupy. But adding A&M or VT would be more about keeping up with the Pac 10's future TV deal, which would be sick if they got the other Texas schools. Also, I think you underestimate the potential A&M has. They have the fan support, location, and money to be a national power. They just need to get out from under Texas' shadow and splitting from them to join the SEC would do that. Also VT with SEC help could a national contender as well

UF dilutes FSU and Miami's recruiting power enough by themselves. OM recruits as well as those Florida schools

Killer instinct says we need to kill them while they're down. Giving UF another school to compete with wouldn't hurt non-UF SEC schools either.
