Research is a major component of how academic standings are judged. Being a member of AAU is an elite status which means that a school is strong in research.

BTW, all the schools in the the Big 10 are AAU members, although Nebraska just got kicked out even though they have been a member since 1909 I think.

Right, and in that sense, it does matter, but some people on here think an AAU membership trumps all. UGA is in all reality a much better school than Mizzou, but it's not an AAU member. Mizzou is really not much harder to get into than most SEC schools.

Being able to get into a school by itself is not really that important. AAU membership takes into account a number of factors that include endowment $, research $, alumni donations, etc. I don't disagree with you about UGA, but the "academic community" doesn't care about your or my opinion.

I agree and I don't have much respect for the "academic community", but I like to judge a school based on it's actual student body. You know the people who ARE the university and pay it's bills, rather than what a bunch of over educated PhD's who live in the fantasy land we know as academia think.

I understand busey, but you & I don't matter. The AAU has much clout & membership is invitation only.

I agree that MIzzou isn't the best choice. It was denied by the big ten. MU is a good school and all that, but I don't think the SEC should take schools rejected by the big ten.

I mean they get Nebraska and why can't the SEC get a similar program. When you think about, SC, AR, A&M, and MU are not big time gets.

The last two schools to join the big ten were Penn State and Nebraska. Not one of the last four to the SEC has a similar football and academic pedigree.

If anything adding those schools adds fuel to the fire that the big got the better schools. I think the SEC is just settling for lesser schools instead of working to get schools like Texas and Florida State which be equal to the big ten getting Penn State and Nebraska.

We DON'T want Texas (and Texas doesn't want SEC).

So why settle for less? Just because the big ten got Nebraska the SEC has to add MU and A&M? SEC expansion football wise could be better.

Compare Penn State and Nebraska to the last four schools that entered the SEC. It isn't even close when it comes to football programs and academics together.

The SEC should can do get better. I if the SEC hadn't gotten too desperate and added SC and AR and waited it could have landed Texas and A&M which would be the better deal and even Miami is better than AR and SC.

Ralph, Texas would never go to the SEC even if invited. One reason is the SEC would not allow the Longhorn network as it exists. Also, UT would only go to the Big 10 or PAC 12 where most or all of the member schools are AAU members. The SEC now has only Vandy, UF, ATM, & Mizzou as AAU members.

I repeat: DO NOT underestimate the academic side of this.

poo

there was a post and thread a couple of weeks ago by a Bama poster on the SEC rant. it shows the numbers of fans each team has.

Mizzou has more fans than many SEC teams. Its a more populous state than Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky or South Carolina.
it has two cities which are each bigger than any city in Louisiana, Mississippi or Kentucky or South Carolina.

Fans = TV sets. TV sets = $ contracts.

And Missouri will compete in basketball. rough deal if they are really going to the east.
lots of travel for them and UK. If they were in the west, they could win the hoops division. They will get to the SEC finals a lot.

And, its in the academic elite club as is Tex A&M, Florida, and Vandy, but not LSU, not MSU, not OM, Not Ga, not UTk and not Ark.

Louisville proper is much bigger than both KC and STL proper. Just saying.

I love how this time last year Mizzou was begging for an invitation to the Big 10, even four weeks ago they still wanted to join the Big 10... Doesn't make sense?

As a fan and one that enjoys road trips, this university doesn't remotely excite me.

I don't like it...

I understand the negative feelings toward Mizzou, but you have to understand that the school does have potential athletically. They have a decent sized fanbase & decent sized TV market.

I don't know why Mizzou was not accepted by the Big 10. It would have been a great fit IMHO.

Based on what my Kentucky buddy has said about U of L, we both know that they are not an SEC school. Their fans are gold chain, jersey wearers. No collars to be found. They deserve no bid. Besides, if your school could get a real coach, they'd be irrelevant anyway.

I'm not vouching for Louisville in any way. And what you said is true.

I was just saying that something Otto said was false. Half of Louisville's population are UK fans (if not more than half).

And now that we have made friend, I expect you to send me a bottle of Pappy's.
