You should ask your cousin why it even matters when talking about athletic conferences. Besides, Texas wouldn't even be the top academic institution in the SEC. Vandy wouldn't leave the SEC for $100 mil. Does your cuz know that Big 12 and SEC academics from top to bottom are pretty much equal?

The problem is that it isn't comparing the Big 12 with the SEC. It is comparing the SEC with the ACC, Pac12 and B1G. The eggheads will say why go to the SEC when much better academic options are available.

As far as why athletic affiliation matters, there tends to be a large amount of collaborative research done with members within athletic conferences, with the ultimate being the B1G and the CIC. Lets not also forget that perception is more powerful than truth. The backwoods hillbilly redneck is the national perception of the SEC. That is what the academic side of UT sees and is further magnified with the various cheating scandals throughout the SEC's past.

The academic argument is so stale. Texas is a whopping 7 or 8 spots ahead of A&M with regard to public universities. I believe they're 12th or 13th and A&M is something like 18th or 19th.

In other words, they won't be slumming it w/ the likes of A&M, UGA, UF, and obviously Vandy.

But make no mistake, this is the Harvard of the south.
