with all this talk of academics i am just wondering something. What does what conference your atheletic teams play in have to do with academics? what if ULL was in the same conference as harvard? all that means is that they would play each other in sports.right? i don't see what i am missing here with this academic stuff.

personally I think the academic crap is mostly bull. I think it looks good to be associated with strong academic institutions but it's not like Texas would join the Ivy League if offered.

In the end of the day, the driving force behind expansion is the almighty dollar.

The connection between academics and athletics is BS. After all, most student-athletes are at their schools because they are great athletes, not scholars. Unfortunately, perception is reality for many people. Texas fans think they belong with Stanford, Berkeley and UCLA while LSU, Ole Miss, etc. are miles beneath them. Of course, these same snobs fail to acknowledge that affiliating themselves with strong academic institutions doesn't make the student-athletes they recruit any smarter than those at SEC schools.
