I know David McWilliams. There is not a finer man around. I decided to take a look at what David McWilliams might have done. Here's what I found:

WOW. STOP THE FRIGGIN' PRESSES!
I knew Ken Dabbs, too. He recruited Earl Campbell.
Small "loans" and use of rental cars for poor kids to go home. If I recall, one of them was going home for a funeral.
WOW! Did you notice the word "loans"? They were paid back. Shady, for sure.
Now compare that to a gold TransAm for Eric Dickerson (who reneged, went to SMU, but kept the car), $200/week to Kevin Murray while still in high school, at least $3,500 for Murray while in college, $27,000 of federal money (Dept. of Housing and Urban Development) to pay players for jobs they didn't perform in the early 90's (paid by the head of the 12th Man Foundation), etc. etc. etc.
The biggest Aggie joke of all was that all this was found out via the legal discovery process in unrelated matters, because the dumb-fauks paid them with checks!

McWilliams, a former UT assistant who was named head coach in December, admitted that he lent an athlete about $50 for transportation to his home and allowed another to use his car.

The violations released by the school on Monday -- small cash loans to players by coaches, ticket scalping, free legal and dental services, free meals and excessive recruiting contacts -- were detailed in a 23-page letter from the Infractions Committee.

Do your homework! Aggie coaches did not hand out cash. They got put on probation for boosters paying them not the coaches. If you really believe Tx did not also cheat during the 80's you must be under 21! I am sorry but have to vent" 80% of all BCS schools cheat. Mostly boosters but honestly the SEC is the worst! Also 5 years ago Tx was caled Pen U. 30 0n 30 Pony Express is a great show

OK, they just drove up in the yard with brand new cars and told them it would belong to the recruit if they signed.
quote:
In 1988, the NCAA uncovered numerous incidents of assistant coaches, boosters, and current players offer improper incentives to prospective athletes. On one occasion an assistant coach drove a Datsun 280ZX to the prospective athlete's house. Parked it in the drive way and told him, in not so many words, that it could be his if he signed with the Aggies...(snip)... To make matters worse, the assistant coach repeatedly lied about his involvement in those (and other) recruiting violations. He admitted during a hearing, once he finally came clean, that he knew what he was doing was a violation of the rules, knew that he should've reported them, and did not do so to try to cover it up.
College football's dirtiest programs: Texas A&M No. 3

INTERFERENCE CHARGED IN TEXAS A&M INVESTIGATION
A Texas A&M football booster who was forced to disassociate from the school said officials urged him to stonewall the NCAA's investigation into a summer jobs scandal.
Warren Gilbert Jr. told the Dallas Morning News that Coach R.C. Slocum, former vice president Robert Smith and others convinced him not to meet with investigators. Gilbert said university officials ultimately portrayed him as a lone violator of NCAA rules.

R.C. Slocum was the bagman for Warren Gilbert. They met in the underground parking garage at Northpark Mall in Dallas.

A&M is that chick who breaks up with her previous boyfriend and starts dating somebody new...but all she can talk about to the new boyfriend is the old boyfriend.
Let it go, Ags. Let it go.

You have summed up this thread perfectly.

Spot-on right there.

A&M can't play defense. All else is hypothetical.

fwatts -enjoyed the post although I could have used a summary version on part II. Your description was meaningful and helps me better understand the uniqueness of aTm and the tradition. The SEC press conf was neat and your Pres has charisma and is unique as is the fight song...but shows tradition and commoradity...which is a good thing these days. My dad was at Tulane and a marine in WWII so undertand the importance and distinction of university life styles and values from the military.
