In hindsight, why on earth would these schools have agreed to this deal?

It has been the worst and most likely to be picked apart league in the country for....ever.

27 months is a laughable amount of "notice" to give to exit.

Don't know why schools would agree to it. I know why the conference would push it. Maybe at the time it was made it was believed that the Big East was stable.

Actually now that I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. If it came into play after the ACC/Big East thing in 2003, it would have been away for lesser conference members to keep bigger members in the Big East and hoped that it would deter other conferences from trying to pick them off. Similar to the grant of rights thing with the Big 12 today.
