Saw this posted on TA, if this is true would be sweet if y'all still had our flag and followed through on this 20 years later.

quote:

I want to take you back to our last game at Kyle field as a SWC member. Some of the "other schools" had taken our flag that was flown in the stadium down and presented it to us as a token of best wishes, but the Aggies did it a little different, your student leaders had a meeting at midfield and presented a token of best wishes, but kept the flag and promised to fly it again when you joined us in the SEC, at least that was what was reported on the Radio Broadcast that day. I have to admit it made a big impression on me, and I have been waiting for twenty years for this to happen.

I was a senior in high school that year, but I asked a friend of mine who was in the Corps a few years before me and he remembered a story like this, but the exact details had slipped away.

If we get in the SEC and can find that flag, I don't want to be cheezy, but I think it would be awesome to offer it again upon playing at Kyle or Little Rock or Fayetteville

Yeah its a cool story. I was at the 1991 game at Kyle. I don't remember the specifics of the ceremony but I remember something....along with lots of drunk Ags heckling our mascot, cussing and throwing ice into our section.

Like it or not, we have a shite load of history together. I was just thinking that it will be nice in the future when they play those "Razorback Memories" segments in Razorback Stadium from pre 1992, some of them will be against actual present-day conference foes.

I was also at the 1990 A&M game in Fayetteville, which was a helluva a game and the first time I ever sat in a skybox with my awesome uncle (RIP). Seems like we mounted a come back but came up short.

I was also at the 1988 game in Fayetteville which was in a sleet/snow storm. I remember it because its the only time my dad left a game early due to weather. We wound up watching the end of the game on a TV in Gregson Lodge on campus.

I have a lot of memories of A&M games from when I was but a wee lad.

The Southwest Classic is already going to be a hype atmosphere this year. If y'all announce this year (and can find that damned flag somewhere) it would pretty cool to give it to us in Cowboys Stadium this year.

Everybody would then chant SEC.

Then, we'll kick your asses.

might be the first time an entire stadium chanted SEC in unison.

Well, now we know why my buddy didn't remember specifics...

I think Arkansas and A&M being in the SEC West will be like moving to a city and finding out that an old classmate is in the same industry that you're in ... you still want to take their business and to kick their arse in dealmaking, but it's nice to see an old, somewhat familiar face while you're doing it ...

Second time, actually.

Indy Bowl, 1991 (Dec). UGA fans chanted it at Arkansas fans, and we chanted it right along with them.

as a Dallasite I'm looking forward to being able to talk SEC football with someone besides LSU fans.

No, all hatred and insults aside, it will be sorta cool.

I'm of the train of thought that I like the SEC as is. I would feel the same if the team being bandied about was FSU.

But in the end, if the SEC has to expand, it will be nice to have an old familiar foe added to the mix.

We have more history with A&M than anybody else in the SEC does(67 games). So it won't be all that bad to have A&M, if it has to happen.

ETA: I recall that A&M crowd as being extremely hostile. I was 14, and hadn't been to a lot of away games at that point. I remember it got so bad (most likely a small group of extremely drunken assholes) that the mascot was just done with it. Usually the mascot/cheer people will "play along" but it was just non-stop throat curdling cussing and insults. I remember that A&M won, and at the end, the mascot was pretending to shoot hoops, I guess saying "we'll still own the SWC in basketball this winter".

I don't know, weird experience, lots of anger, lots of weird.... I also specifically remember the grackle horde infesting the trees as we walked towards Kyle. That and the bats just made for a creepy scene in my memory.

When I was in the Aggie Band, we froze our butts off in sleet in Fayetteville in 1984. It was brutal. Was it bad in 88, too?

Maybe I have my games mixed up. It might have been the 84 game I am remembering.

In 84 I would have been 7. I'll try to look it up.

It might have been that particular game. The point is I have been to at least 7 Arkansas/A&M games, counting the last two in Jerryworld.

I found a link to the Razorback Band performing at halftime of that 1984 game. Maybe that's the sleet game. The stands appear to have emptied at halftime. I'm pretty sure that's when we left. Dad was hardcore, and we never left early. But that game, we got the hell out of there.

I was so cold I don't even remember the Razorback Band playing at Halftime.
