and the SEC is subpar with only 2 members(Vandy and Florida).

Chronicle of Higher Education reports that UGA and LSU are on the short list for next candidates for membership

It is an association of universities that have shown a very large commitment to research. That does not mean that schools not in the AAU aren't good schools, they just may not focus on research as much.

Really? So Nebraska is a better school than UConn? Missouri better than UGA? Wake Forest is a bad school? William and Mary, pretty shitty?

I am not saying that the schools are better than one another.

I am saying that its a club. And in the club, members get certain privileges.

And the privileges are federal research dollars.

Having friends in the SEC in the AAU can help LSU get more research money. Dont think that the LSU administration wont be pushing Mizzou over Virginia Tech for membership, when their TV markets are a wash, if LSU wants into AAU. Florida, Vandy, and UGA would push for them as well. Arkansas for geographic reasons.

Yeah, but who are you going to send to the east if TAMU and Mizzou join the SEC? Can't very well break up the Alabama boys.

Being a member of the AAU is definitely an advantage, and all schools that are members are pretty good schools. My post was in response to nola, who said that not being a member of the AAU means "exactly" that a school is not a good school.

I am looking at it now, and it is a great list. However, not being on the list does not mean an institution is not a good school, just that they don't focus on research as other schools do.

Send both Bama and Auburn to the East and bring Vandy to the West. Auburn is geographically farther east than Vandy anyway.

The chance of LSU and Georgia getting admitted to the AAU is very low. They don't admit schools because its time to add another one. In the last 10+ years only 3 have been added. In addition many other good schools are moving towards becoming a research focused institution. Notre Dame or Dartmouth will probably be the next schools invited because of their prestige and recent move towards research.
