I have heard repeatedly of how this whole realignment push is due only to the greed of the programs involved (k* - the keep of all things holy in college athletics) and it irritates me every time I hear it. We were on schedule to be paid quite handsomely in the b12 (more than all but 0u and tu) and while we might (should) end up making more $'s in the SEC I don't think it would have been worth the move considering what we would have been making in the b12.

It seems texas is one of the worst offenders when it comes to having $'s drive their actions because they are willing to hang on to ESPN Moo in spite of the fact that it has alienated their rivals and further, kept them from transferring to a more stable conference.

I think Clay explains perfectly why the move for A&M to the SEC was made:

For those of you who say fan opinion doesn't matter, I'd direct you to Texas A&M. The Aggie anger over A&M's veering away from the SEC (last year) at the last moment was a big part of the decision to join the SEC this year. A&M knew its fanbase would stand steadfast through a trying departure. That's because A&M fans were demanding the school leave. This wasn't a top down decision, this was a bottom up decision, Aggie fans took control of their own fate.

During the realignment episode in the summer of 2010, I don't think the A&M administration had any idea how strong the desire of the Aggie faithful was to be a part of something as special as the SEC. Even though they made the decision to play it safe at that time, it shocked them to make this realization and I think also made them give the possibility serious consideration during the ensuing 12 months. This is why the decision to go ahead and make the move came so easily this time around.

Thank God we have a president with enough forethought and guts to pull the trigger on something that would be a "one hundred year decision".

Conference stability is the issue. Nothing else.

Only how it applies to Texas is how I always hear it.

Seems very straightforward why you would want to get away from them.

There was this Peanuts cartoon where Lucy (Texas) promised to hold the ball for Charley Brown (Aggies) so Charley could kick it. Every time they did this, Lucy jerked the ball away and Charley would fall flat on his arse trying to kick it.

Well it only took the aggies 100+ years but they finally said the hell with it. That about sums up the aggie experience with Texas. They got tired of getting screwed.

conferences are expanding for 2 reasons: stability and money.

schools change conferences for 3 reasons: conference stability (aka auto bcs spot), money (tv and bowl revenue), and TEXAS.

Worthwhile read Maroon...thanks! It sure tells the story about aTm and the current question facing Missou.

Never heard of OutKick the Coverage before. Is it popular in TX or just a website?

I didn't discover OKTC until all of this realignment stuff started up again back in August.

I think he still resides in Nashville.

quote:

Clay Travis is the only former student manager in the history of college athletics to marry an NFL cheerleader. He managed to pull this off despite an irrational affinity for the television shows Dawson's Creek and My Super Sweet 16. While being raised in Nashville, Tenn., Travis developed a healthy obsession with college sports and Alyssa Milano. As a teenager his greatest accomplishment was taking a doo-rag wearing Luke Duke (balling as Tom Wopat) to the hole at the Nashville YMCA.

In the midst of a stellar legal career during which he specialized in rewarding the unjust and punishing the oppressed, Travis began writing for CBS Sports's SPiN section in September 2005. Shortly thereafter Travis made sports journalism history by chronicling MTV's Gauntlet II in his game diary. He expects his Pulitzer nomination to arrive any day. In July of 2008 Travis left CBS to accept an associate editor position at Deadspin.com.

Travis has many friends in the CBS universe, but he values no relationship more dearly than his with Southeastern Conference broadcaster Verne Lundquist. This is despite the recent strain in the relationship that has arisen over the fact that Lundquist does not know he exists. Travis is a 2001 graduate of George Washington University and a 2004 graduate of Vanderbilt Law School.

He considers Varsity Blues to be a legitimate work of cinematic genius and believes any suggestion otherwise to be heresy. Despite his legal credentials, he was recently baffled over the distinction between heresy and hearsay. On the positive side, he is an expert on the differences between their, there and they're, to and too, your and you're and only wishes his readers were as well.

Clay's first book, Dixieland Delight: A Football Season on the Road in the Southeastern Conference is available in bookstores. His second book, Man the Book, is also available in bookstores. His third book, On Rocky Top, will focus on the University of Tennessee's 2008 season. This means that Travis has thousands of dollars riding on each UT game in terms of future book sales. But he will not be nervous about this. Not at all. In the end it will be the finest work of SEC literature since Travis's prior magnum opus on the SEC, Dixieland Delight. Regardless of what transpires On Rocky Top will be in fine bookstores and a few porn parlors come July of 2009. In hardback, no less.

Travis currently resides in Nashville, Tenn. with his wife, Lara, and son, Fox. He is a practicing attorney.

If you have an opportunity, go back and read some of Clay's posts related to the fact that ESPN and Fox can really be held responsible for all of this realignment stuff. It makes for a very interesting viewpoint that not many people have thought of.
