For our next coach as has been rumored.

Where does the top pay for a HC end? There has to be a point we tap out right?

This is college not the NFL

I remember when Saban broke the 1 million salary while at LSU and many at the time thought that was outrageous.

Now we pay coordinators double or triple that amount just 20 years later.

A college Linebackers coach making 500k? Geez...

I'm just kind of wondering are we really headed for 20 million a year to pay head coaches? "Pay him 10 million used to be a joke."..but here we are..."pay him 15"

I think we're in an unhealthy territory paying college coaches this kind of money.

Saban has 7 rings...a guy like Riley has zero...im just saying...and he's 38????...

I want a great coach...but not at the expense of ruining college football. Perhaps we're past that point.

Just because you can pay this much doesn't mean you should...

Thoughts on the "market"

The current market for an elite HC is in the $7.5-$9m range. The tv rights negotiaton gives us $20m extra to play with. If you spend 1/4 that on a HC, the new market is $12.5m-14m. I wouldn’t blink at $15m to be honest.

Over the next decade, when cfp expansion hits and conferences realign further, I expect this to push closer to $20m.

College football is a massive business, and it’s a sellers market for elite coaches.

I don’t know why the numbers scare you. If the schools can pay it, let them.

The market is what the market is. Either you shop or you don’t. People that think NIL only affect players are shortsighted - it will drive up coach price tags too.

ETA - couldn’t agree more with the post above. To be clear, not saying nil matters to coaches on the ground floor but players know where to go to maximize nil in college and get prepped for Sunday’s and that’s what affects coaching pay.

Like I said because you can doesn't mean you should.

We're reaching the end of the expansion phase of the bubble but we're not at the collapse phase yet. Attendance has fallen off, which is a warning sign. ESPN hemorrhaging money is another. But as long as the networks are shelling out cash we have a ways to go.

It won' be a $12 million dollar a year contract because Scott Woodward can hire Lane Kiffin for around $6 to $6.5 million dollars a year and lane Kiffin is also a far better coach than any of the coaches that would cost $12 million dollars a year, in any event.
