I have no insider knowledge on the search but I have first hand knowledge of the frick ups that are LSU administration. One party will be getting cornholed and it ain't the coach regardless who it is.

LSU is forced to pay out the arse for ole Jimbo or Herman because they're negotiating against themselves. If they strike out, where else they going to go? You move down to second tier where you will also be paying a premium for that level.
I just think by publicly showing your hand is leaning one direction for this long, you have fewer cards and opportunities to play them.
The LSU admin apparently can't hold water, so it's doubtful a master strategy is taking place besides writing down a number on a piece of paper and sliding it across the table.

They are forced to pay out the arse because that is the going rate for winning, not because of their negotiating position.

I would argue having to automatically pay top 5 money - and claim it's the going rate- would say the opposite.
