Glover Johns, who wrote "Clay Pigeons" was a mentor of David Hackworth's.

Yeah, the part in About Face when he quoted Clay Pigeons to Johns to justify his response to an order is priceless

Ian Toll has a trilogy on the War in the Pacific. The first book of the three is Pacific Crucible. All three are fantastic and almost read like a Tom Clancy novel.
