Just watched Anthony Mackie recite Shakespeare in his New Orleans accent on Youtube.
It sounded different from stereotypical learned speech and dictation that is used for Shakespeare, with a few local inflections on it, but it didn't really sound like true Y'at.
I would love to rewrite Shakespeare in the New Orleans dialect and nomenclature for him and other local actors to perform.
King Lear rewritten as a King of a Mardi Gras Krewe. Or MacBeth rewritten in the same theme: a plot to become King of Rex or Endymion.
Romeo and Juliet that takes place in Calliope or the Ninth Ward. Much Ado About Nothing based among the workers and denizens of the Quarter.
The TEmpest with a Voodoo theme. Or The Taming of the Shrew centered around drag queens in the Quarter.
Could be a fun exercise at least, if not a decent reimagining for stage or film.
