I'm reading this to my 7 y/o son. We just finished the part where Rubin Pritchard dies when he falls onto Billy's axe. Freaked my son out pretty bad and he started crying. I do think he was more scared because he has a little axe to chop wood with and it really hit home for him. I don't know if we should continue reading because the worst is yet to come.

I would keep reading it to him. I don't think I was 7 when I read it, but knowing the world doesn't end perfectly isn't a bad thing to learn, especially from fiction literature.

i agree with you. i was honestly just shocked at his reaction to that part of the story. he doesn't cry easily and he was bawling. i'm thinking his imagination got the best of him.

I pulled some classic tales from the national archive (three little pigs, etc.) And was reading them to my daughter. Was about half way through and had to stop. We had violent writings at one time

We made it through the book and he handled it like a champ. I could tell he was upset but he understood the sacrifice. When i was tucking him in for the night he asked what are we reading next!

I've made the same mistake.

Nice. I remember falling in love with books like this as a kid and look forward to when mine are old enough to appreciate them.

what amazes me is that i use to have to force him to go to bed now he wants to get in bed earlier so we can read more.Its been really great for the both of us. I use to watch tv until i fell asleep now i just go straight to sleep

I just ordered Hacthet by Gary Paulsen for our next read. I remember liking it when i was younger but don't remember details.

I read this to my son when he was 8-9. I followed it by setting a trap out by the pond by our home and we caught raccoon. We let him go, but is pretty cool.
