The Silk Road by Peter Frankopan
Just finished this audiobook and it was a fantastic walk through the history of civilization focused on the middle east and the battle for those trade routes throughout history. Runs all the way up through the iraq invasion but modern events are only covered briefly.

Its a very even handed and refreshing take on history that steps back from the typical eurocentric analysis that is covered in tons of other books.

I’ll give it a listen.

Have you ever listened to Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History Podcasts? King of Kings I-III are quite good lecture style listening.

Ya those were fantastic, I kind of burned through all those kind of podcasts, have a few sciencey ones I listened too, and have been doing a ton of different history / science audiobooks and lecture courses now.

I drive about 15 hours a week for work so have a lot of time

Those are my favorite categories. I’m going to check out the Silk Road but would you mind sharing some of your other favorites in that category?

A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived by Adam Rutherford

Sapiens & Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond

All of the above are sort of story of humanity / civilization so i would break them up in terma of listening.

Spqr - roman
Empire of the summer moon - comanche
Citizens - French revolution

The great courses on Audible has a lot of ancient history lecture series and they have all been pretty good.

Ill look back through my list and see if anything else jumps out.

The above are still history so definitely a bit dry. I drive for 12 hours a week and knock them out that way
