The OP literally said he wanted to try one out to see if he likes it and you recommended a 10 book series..

I would also have suggested these two. I am pleasantly surprised to see so many people mentioning Salems Lot. It was my first King novel (at a far too tender age)and is probably my favorite. I re-read it for the first time in several years last month. It is an example of what King did when he was doing his best work -- full, interesting characters, approachable prose, and a scary AF story.

His short stories and novellas are probably better than his novels, overall, and definitely made better movies.

I never read the Dark Tower series. By the time it came along I had cooled off on King altogether.
