Natchez Burning Trilogy by Greg Iles Question

First of all, I thought it was a great series of books. Great story that kept me locked into it the whole way. I haven’t read any of the earlier Penn Cage series.
My question is: Is Penn Cage just a complete narcissistic a-hole all the time? He comes across as such an arrogant prick and high and mighty above everyone. He keeps getting people killed, putting his daughter in ridiculously dangerous situations, and constantly thinks he know better than everyone.

I liked the earlier ones better. The one-off stories verus the trilogy.

I liked the earlier books. I could barely make it through the trilogy. I feel like Cage is a slightly exaggerated version of Iles. And the book after the trilogy was so bad I couldn't get past the first few chapters. I'm done with him.
