Has anyone ever queried literary agents?

I've done roughly 40 online submissions since early December. So far have received four no's and zero send us more's. Has anyone else ever been through this process?

Yes, with my first novel I sent out about 25 queries. I actually heard back from all, 24 nos, and 1 asking for additional text. A few weeks later that one came back as a no.

I then self-published that novel, and I went directly to self-publishing for my next three without quering agents.

Would you mind sharing how much you listed your book for and how many copies the top-selling one sold? If not, obviously no biggie.

Yes, years back with all rejections or no responses. It's not unusual on the first go-round. You'll read about the occasional best-seller that was rejected by 40-50 agents.

I published my first book about 12 years ago so my memory may be a little fuzzy. I think the Kindle version was $2.99 and the soft cover was $8.99 also published on Amazon. I published a hardcover edition through Lulu. Its price was $25.00. I don't think any body bought the hardcover version - I purchased a number as gifts to family and friends.

My first book was my best seller but over the past 12 years it's sold only a thousand or so copies. My most recent book was published about four years ago, and has only sold a couple of hundred (I think my last book was my best, but obviously the buying public doesn't share my opinion.)

^^^Appreciate that, man. I just hope that I can get one bite. Self-publishing seems pretty dismal these days. You have to go the whole social media/brand building/influencer bullshite terribly annoying route.

That's pretty much what I did with my first book - the others I didn't put forth as much effort as I should have.
