Texas officials waited to talk to Beard until April 1, when Beard's contract buyout for schools in Texas and/or the Big 12, dropped from $5 million to $4 million. But sources told Horns247 since last week there appeared to be mutual interest from Beard, and a deal came together quickly.

In the end, an opportunity for the 48-year-old Beard to return to Texas, where he got his first taste of coaching as a student assistant under Tom Penders in the early 1990s, proved to be too much to turn down.
