i've used one before w/o any trouble. blew through a 210# 7 pt at just under 200 yds. deer wobbled off 10 yds and dropped. one of my relatives hunts with a 300 weatherby mag without any problems....

they are very good retrievers but require a firm hand when training them because they are really hard headed. their hard head works both ways in that they don't quit on you. don't expect much out of them in the hotter weather either (same as labs). i've hunted with a few of them (buddies dogs). ...

that lake is a tough nut to crack if you are new to specs. i'd suggest a different area if possible, some of which are not much father away than Lake P and you can launch at the same landings as you would as if fishing the lake....
