He took the discovery flight with Fly by Knight in Hammond a few months ago and is about to complete his ground school training via an online course.
He is looking to start the flying portion in January and we are only aware of Fly by Knight. Are there any other places we should be looking into around the north shore area?

Does he know what kind of flying he wants to do professionally? Lots of potential routes to take.
I’m unfamiliar with flight schools in that area, but will disagree with those suggesting a 4 year aviation degree. I would highly recommend getting a degree in an unrelated field to have non-aviation career options down the road to fall back on.
Guard service is a good option if he has any connections. Otherwise, encourage him to get his ratings completed as quickly as possible and start building connections & flight time.

just got a young baw hooked up for pilot training in the Swamp Fox, all he has to do is not flunk out of UPT and he gets an F-16 with his name on it

I hope the kid realizes what he's getting, those training slots are pretty competitive right now, so far it look like he'll hold up his part of the bargain, he has a couple of civilian ratings and is about to finish up at the Citadel

Those slots are near impossible in some areas unless you’ve got some serious connections. I’m sure he appreciates the gravity of that. Sounds like he’s in good shape already.

just by sheer happenstance I'm doing some training with their current squadron commander, we hit it off pretty well and have similar backgrounds, the other guy we're training with knows the young kid's dad and has flown with him a lot so we were double teaming him for a week unitil he submitted

Find a 4 year university that offers a restricted ATP course.
He’ll get through with 1000 hours instead of having to bust hump for the last 500.

If your budget can stomach it AND he gets TOPS, Send him to La Tech for the aviation program.
And if he can knock out his private pilot before going to a college aviation program that would be beneficial as opposed to showing up with zero hours

But spend ~2 extra years doing it. No need, IMO.

I think these aviation curriculums slow down your progression and drive up your costs, there's not enough scholastics to stretch out a commercial/instrument/multi over four years

LA Tech and double major in a backup option. Cheaper to log the hours through LA Tech than independently and the service academies require a long commitment.

Absolutely. It is also severely limiting when it comes to alternate sources of income when shite inevitably hits the fan in this industry. Just doesn’t make much sense in today’s hiring environment, which won’t last forever.

I'd encourage him to look at the AF reserve (403rd in Biloxi has C130s IIRC) or ANG. If he can get an enlisted loadmaster spot he'd learn a lot about flying plus make connections for any polit slots that open after he gets his degree. The training is over a year, so he'd make a lot of money, plus get educational benefits. Also, look for any CAP programs in your area.
Delta State in Cleveland, MS also has an avation program. Before that, I look for JCs in your area with a program.
