I've always dreamed of going. Should I go to the north or south island or both? I want to do one of the backpacking, camping, bus tours.

I did South Island. There was some things I'd like to see on the North Island, but I only had 12 days or so and didn't want to stretch my time too much.

I think I did Queenstown-Wanaka-Milford Sound-Fox Glacier-West Coast. My favorite thing I did was canyoneering out of Wanaka. It was fricking intense(and expensive), but definitely the coolest canyoning I've done. Kayaking in Milford Sound is a relatively cheap awesome-awesome experience. I liked Wanaka more than Queenstown, but they're only a couple hours apart.

Didn't camp any, wish I would have. Only thing I'd point out about that is the bugs are fricking terrible in some areas, so I'd look into it.

I only had a chance to do the north island and enjoyed it. I stayed with a local that took me all around. We went to beaches, Auckland, explored glow worm caves, went to a Maori village and Hobbiton.

Thanks for the input. I noticed there are several different tours to use. What do you recommend?

Both, for the reasons listed above the beer there is also quite good. I enjoyed Monteiths gold lager. Good stuff. Make the trip my man.

Do the AJ Hackett Bungy at Nevis Highwire. There was a river boarding group called Mad Dog and we basically boogie boarded down the Kawarau River. Check out Milford Sound tour, but I must warn the mosquitos are relentless. There is so much to do at the South Island.

When I was in Malaysia we had people that went to New Zealand and most all of them just rented RV's and drove around, cooked, etc. and all had a great time. I never got to go but they all seemed to have a great time.

Here are some of my personal recs from NZ LINK

I went a couple of years ago for my honeymoon and we did both islands. We only did the northern part of the south island, and my husband and I are already planning our 20 year anniversary trip to go back and spend more time on the south island (we are expecting baby #1 in a few weeks, so we probably won't have the time/money to go before then )

Yes. I should have done some international traveling with my ex-wife before we had our first child. Now I'm glad I didn't spend the money on her. lol

South Island is fantastic. Rent a car and drive, they are beaters but they are cheap. Intra-island flights are cheap Air NZ, Jetstar are the two major players. Most towns have service. I didn't make it to Queenstown or the Southland but I have heard amazing things. Try to hit the shoulder seasons, I went in March (start of NZ fall) and the weather was amazing, but the crowds subdued. Avoid the Christmas holiday and any NZ bank holidays.

I went two years ago. My sister lived in Auckland. We took twelve days and hung out in the north island. Going back for the south. Going during our summer is a little cheaper as its their winter.
Spent for a week in the Taupo area. Was awesome. Lots of hiking, skiing, so much.
Spent rest in and around Auckland.
Waitomo caves are cool.
Let me know if you want more info.
The beer is incredible as well. Macs, monte its, moa, all of it.
Country is remarkable.
