Need a new WiFi router since my current one is 7+ years old.
Not sure what I should get. Its a 2 person household. We cut the cord so stream media almost exclusively. We also use wifi for 2 smartphones, the Roku, and 2 laptops. Not all at the same time.
Was seriously considering pulling the trigger on this: Securfi Almond only b/c of the 5000+ reviews, but I've never heard of the brand so decided to check here.

First, this is going to act as a router OR repeater. Not both.

I would look for a router with b/g/n and ac.

I've given up on that Securfi. I suspect most of those reviews are false.

So Netgear, Cisco, Motorola etc? Give me a link or model # for a good router. Single story home under 2000sq ft BTW.

No need to overthink it. Modest house, a few average clients. I'm assuming none of them use 802.11ac adapters, but no harm in getting one in preparation for future devices.

The ASUS RT-N66U is a crowd favorite. I'd wager that the RT-AC66U is similarly awesome. Both would likely be overkill for your situation.

Given the current price point, I will go with the Netgear d 7000 over the Asus one that the previous poster mentioned. Both of them are great routers. Here is a detailed head-to-head comparison of both.

Best? Wrt1900ac. But you don't need it and won't need it for 4 years at the soonest. The Asus whatever66u wireless n model is beyond sufficient. Buffalo makes a fantastic n600 router- a buddy of mine just picked one up for $30. The Cisco/Linksys "ea" N- and AC- series routers are great. Buy something that's n600 or n900 with a USB/esata port and DLNA. Place a large USB external HDD on the router, map the drive to your laptop/desktop, set your OS to backup weekly to the HDD attached to the router.

And, for the Asus AC router supporters who are skeptical of the new WRT:

Don't get a Linksys, have tried 2 of them, one back when N was new, it sucked, and one earlier this year for AC, and it was just god awful.

Asus is the best of the best, grab one from them.

and if you need to extend the range, which most likely you will not.

You're basing this off of brand names and firmware during "the dark years." The original Linksys WRT firmware was some of the best ever made. They went back to a dd-wrt- and tomato-compatible chipset after the Belkin buyout to move back to more traditional. The "move to something new" didn't work well, so they've gone back to what works, and they've had great results thus far.

And I like the Linksys E and EA series routers. I get great results from both. Did have my ea4500's "internet" port cease to work 13 months after purchase, but the router itself works great as a second access point now. And it was plenty good before that port failure.

I had the EA6500ac and it was pure garbage. My N I had years before that was also garbage. Linksys can SMD.

My D-Link N ran circles around my Linksys N, and my current Asus ac runs circles around the Linksys ac EA series, in my cases.

Would you mind expanding? What did/didn't it do?

For a hundred bucks that Securifi router is a rip-off. It's not even a dual band router, something that is pretty standard at that price point. Also for that money it should have three antennas, not just two. Looks like they cobbled a touch screen onto an outdated router and found a niche market for it. Ewww, look, bright and shiny!

To simplify your shopping, just look for an N900 router. The N900 will have 3 antennas, dual band capability (2.4 and 5.0 Ghz) and dual radios to allow simultaneous operation on both bands. With channel bonding enabled speeds of 450 Mbps are possible on each band, hence the 900 designation.

Does anyone have any experience with EnGenius products. Came across the ESR1200 for $50 today.

I would not buy the AirPort Extreme unless you have at least one mac and iOS device in the house.

I have the AirPort Extreme but have some dead spots in my house. Does the express act as a repeater or a separate router? It's annoying switching between routers.

He express can act as a stand alone or as an extender of your current network.

Newegg will have the EnGenius ESR1200 on shellshocker for $40 this afternoon. I'm tempted to pick one up to keep around as a spare.
