I posted on the OT and it was suggested that I come here for answers.
Has anyone done business with Vivint? I'm looking for indoor and outdoor security cameras.
Are you satisfied with the company?
Upfront cost? Monthly cost?
Do you have a suggestion for camera based security that isn't vivint?

NO
That is my reccomendation. Don't do it. I'm counting down the months until my contract is over and I can cancel.
Contract is too long and expensive. Customer service is mediocre, in order to replace unoperational equipment they want to lock you into an even longer contract. Pay a little more money upfront and do-it-yourself and save a LOT of money in the long run.

Our experience has been OK. Their customer service isn't all that great. They offer basically no help over the phone and they have yet to install the doorbell camera completely. Actually had a guy out this week to replace our broken thermostat, but he basically wasn't able to install the doorbell camera either. They keep telling us that we need an Electrician to complete the install, but I get the impression that they are just incompetent.
Also, they charged us a $50 call out fee to replace their broken thermostat, through no fault of ours.
My wife was sold on it by some dude that came to our house one day as they were canvassing our neighborhood. He/they seemed pretty slimy to me. I wouldn't have done it but it gives her peace of mind soooo... We pay $75/mo.
All that said, the system works fine and we are overall pleased with it.

Yeah the guy today was very pushy and scripted. He tried to lead me into the home to "check out my current equipment". I wasn't having any of that.
His offer was fairly good $49.99 for everything. Doorbell, 2 outside, 2 indoor cameras, thermostat, and a couple others. However, I just didn't get a good feeling about the guy.
Most online reviews are horrible, faulty equipment that they refuse to replace. Pricey, long term contracts.
Overall it feels like what they offer is way to good to be true and that's what I'm gathering.

Have a friend who has Vivint and had to wait 9 months for them to come fix something. One of their reps visited us, gave us the whole spiel. The price he quoted was 10.00/month different than what the rep on the phone told me. They also wanted to charge me for another remote. Pretty sure there was a minimum 2 yr contract which I wasn't a fan of.
We have a SimpliSafe system. Got it at Christmas for a $200.00 discount on the system we wanted. It was $400 after the discount and then we added some door/window sensors. $15/month for the basic alarm service, $25 for the internet app and online control of the alarm. I've accidentally hit the panic button twice (once in my pocket and once my three year old pressed it) they called in about 5 seconds. I want to expand by getting the camera and Nest thermostat that are compatible and controlled with the app as well. I installed everything, it was easy as pie. I like it a lot and no contract required.

NEVER EVER GET VIVINT!!!
I made the mistake and I cant stress how bad they are. They will lie straight to your face about pretty much anything and everything.
They will not let you out of your contract for anything.
I even tried telling them I lost my job and am living with my mom. They did not care one bit. They tried getting me to pay almost $1200.

I have point (bought out though) I don't know who to go to for any repairs but the monitoring is monitronics and alarm.com. I'm not complaining about the equipment, it works well. I just don't like being in a 5 year contract. Got the thermostat, door lock, and a sensor for every door and window (told them if they didn't do that then I wouldn't feel safe and won't do it).

Dammit!!! I should have looked here first. I know better. The guy literally just left my house. $99 a month for 2 nest, video, fire, doors, echo, and 4 locks. But if the shite don't work it's useless.

Your contract should explain that you have three days to cancel. I had to take advantage of that little clause when all of the equipment stopped working 4 hours after it was installed and the rep who was supposed to fix it was a no show/no call.

So what does Tech Board recommend for someone who wants/has door/window sensors (presumably these are wired)?
I currently have a wired system in my house. I'm also building a new house. At a minimum, I want door and window sensors, along with motion detectors. I will have a separate camera system so that's not a consideration. Is a traditional company and monitoring setup the best option here?

Perhaps it's because I'm a different state, but I've been happy with Vivint in California. Previously, they were APX, which I believe was banned in Louisiana. A few times, I've had some issues with customer service, but for the most part I've been happy. I had a problem with a sensor triggering false alarms multiple times and they mailed out a new replacement that solved the problem.
My house was prewired for the most part and they are able to use that prewiring and add on other wireless sensors. I used the z wave functionality of the panel to add on multiple light switches and outlets in my house as well. I'm happy enough with them and pay $45 a month, no video on my plan.

What brand light switches did you use? I'm wanting to do this.

They're GE branded. I installed most of them probably about 5-6 years ago. They work great.
