I agree, but it's the only place for it at the moment. We are still in our first house, the new house is going to have a dedicated home theater room with treatments. It sounds remarkable though. The center channel is the only piece that's out of place, the rear and left channel wires are run through the wall.

Neither do I, and my bookshelves are disingenuously overflowing.

As requested, here is a pic of the Audio Research Rig...amps, pre, DAC, and CD are all vacuum tube devices.

This one is in a dedicated listening room.

Enjoy the listen...

The racks (sans equipment in them) in the first rig that you posted are absolutely gorgeous. Are they custom? And if not, where can one find them? I'm assuming they're what I would call "unreasonably priced," but that will probably change one day. As a wise man once said:
"Anyone who has equipment cheaper than mine has junk. Anything more expensive is just excessive. Of course, that changes if and when I can afford something more expensive."

Hopeful Doc,

The racks are built by a guy in Houston. They also have LED ribbon light strips behind each shelf to illuminate the acrylic shelf. I'll post a pic of it lighted in a minute.

I'll post the link to his site below.

It is modular...the bottom is 12", then 10", then the top rack at 8". They come with additional 2" risers to add to any column if needed for taller equipment.

The rack columns have floating ball bearings at the cone points which help with canceling vibrations. Mine are the Quad Rack Modular with 1" acrylic. I also opted to have the edges of each shelf beveled and frosted around the bevel to diffuse the direct light from the LED lights in the back--I am staring right into them when in listening position, so that was a good idea.

The columns can be anodized in just about any color imaginable. I chose blue columns with green lighting because McIntosh gear is blue & green. Seems to work.

If I remember correctly, the racks were about $1500 per level, plus $1000 for the lighting kit...so $13,000 total.

Ultrasonic Audio Racks

Go to the products page and click on zCustom Orders and that leads you to pics of his racks that have been made for many hi if rigs.

What speakers are you driving with the Audio Research rig?

Magico S5.

I also have a pair of Magneplanar 1.7 planars and a pair of Zu Audio full range single driver speakers that I fart around with.

Here is the Zu Audio full range speaker in electric blue stain. The silver speaker is a super tweeter, not a tweeter. The 8" driver covers the full range of audio. The super tweeter just adds effect at extreme high frequencies. They are almost 100db efficient, which means they can be driven with a 10 watt amp with ease.

And the Maggie's (the 2 are pressed together when not in use, as in this pic).
They are crazy inefficient (86db), and need at least 200 solid watts of power just to get 'em to wake up!!

Nice. I've seen Maggie's in action before. Definitely need space to breathe.

Great setup.

Lovin this high end gear! One day maybe...for now this is the rack in progress. I'm not much into 2ch listening because of my main music taste...I prefer bass heavy multi point sound and home theater stuff. Wish I had a dedicated room but just couldn't fit it into the floor plan. So is the way of life....I'll just make due with the room I have and run speakers and subs through the rest of the house.

Good gosh, man. Everything you own is beautiful. And those racks really aren't priced so bad for what they are. And aesthetically, even without the lights, I don't think I've seen a style that I like more.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to look at getting one built for my Mac gear. We have a 6 month old, so he will eventually be big enough to use something like a rack to pull himself up. How steady are they when stacked at the heighth you have?

They are pretty steady, but I have a couple hundred pounds of gear in each stack to help keep the levels pressed firmly down upon the one below it.

Grassy,

I had a pair of Focal 926 before the Utopias--great speaker (I believe it was still JM Lab then).
