The heat is probably not an issue, but the article was absolutely right about the viewing angle and axis issues. A TV above the fireplace is OK for watching across the room from a dining table or something, but I would never try to sit down and seriously watch a program unless I had a top-notch recliner and a good mount to angle the thing toward me.

Think your speakers are far enough apart?
ETA: and close enough to the wall?

Base response and imaging be damned, I bought 25 feet of speaker cables and I'm going to use it all.

The center channel below the tv balances out the fronts. When I was a bachelor I could space the speakers more appropriately and also had a 12" mirage sub. Now life's about compromise.

Diamond to match the fronts? I would love to see this part of your setup. I want to pick up an HTM1 Matrix. They're really not priced all that bad, and I think it's about time I add a center channel.

That McIntosh gear is so sexy.

I've got a marantz nr 1602 amp, 5 B&W M1's, B&W ASW610 sub. Just a mini theatre setup for my 15x15 living room. Have had it for almost 4 years now. Sounds great.

I see. I use precisely placed fronts as my center channel, mines a 2.0, and they pretty much disappear. For lifelike sound I have to pull them off of the wall a good bit since the top of the cabinet, with the mid, is rear ported and it needs adequate bass response to sound good. The lower part of the speaker is front ported.
I figured you had the same setup, but a center channel could fill in where the fronts aren't imaging. I have a family and a dig as well, mine have been knocked over and banged around more than I even know.

I have two Polk TSI400 floor speakers and a yamaha receiver in my system. I mainly watch tv shows and sports but not many movies. Never have been blown away the sound of the system and was thinking about adding to it. Any suggestions on what I should do next?

95% of the time I listen to music, but I'm always impressed with how my 2.0 system does with movies or sports.
I think simply upgrading your amp (this time buy an integrated amplifier instead of a receiver) and speakers are in order. Look on Audiogon to price equipment and get an idea of the synergy between speaker companies and amplifier producers.
Every decision comes down to budget, so it's tough to make recommendations outside of what I researched at the time I bought mine. I judge an amp by its lack of features and electronics. This is my amp, and I dig the fact that it looks like a piece of stereo equipment and not a computer system.

Thanks for the recommendations. Always wondered if I should get a sub or center channel.

Most integrateds have a preamped line out for use with a powered subwoofer, so that's always an option. No need for a center if you have a properly setup floor standing speaker system. The voices are dead centered if they are supposed to be. The better your system, the room, and the positioning in that the better your imaging will be. You can place musicians on the stage when it's all done right.
