The sound of the 926 is pretty close to that of the Utopia line. I really liked the JM Lab/Focal sound and wanted to stay with it. The Utopia keeps that sound but just gives more of it. The low end goes deeper and wider and the Beryllium Tweeter seems a bit smoother, but the " house sound" is still the same.

When budding audiophiles ask me for advice on a pair of floor standers (moving from bookshelf), I usually tell them to hunt down a pair of JMLab/Focal 926/936. I believe it is one of the best values in a floor stander it's size (they usually don't last long on AudioGon)!

I put this system together a few years ago, and other hobbies have distracted me from it... it's a mixture of a desire for a good 2 channel and a good theater. (My fav thing is concert dvd's.)

The SVS sub greatly helped on the low end, and I as I recall, everything but the receiver came off of Audiogon.

Might have to travel upstairs today and rock it.

Keep in mind, though, I've been into audio gear since I was about seven years old (35 years now)...I just didn't plunk down a quarter mill one day and say "set it up over there" (one can dream!!)

I started out with hand me downs from my dad and became curious as to how all that gear worked. I spent countless hours playing around with different configurations and constantly swapping things out (taking dad's gear out of his system!) to listen for differences.

I started mowing lawns to generate cash to get the latest cassette deck with azimuth adjustment or the new Sony CDP-01 (the first commercial CD player in 1983!). I would then sell off a piece of gear to upgrade to another further up the line.

I had a Sony ES system (with the cool rosewood side panels) in high school (late '80's) and upgraded to an Adcom system to get me through the college years. I was a typical broke college student and didn't buy a new piece of gear for 10+ years.

The last 10 years has been good to me in my profession and has afforded me the ability to finally acquire some of the equipment that I previously could only read about in Stereophile magazine. I have the same passion about audio now that I had 30 years ago.

I will always try to help anyone get started in this hobby or anyone who just wants something better than the sound offered to the masses. There is more affordable entry level audiophile gear that sounds fantastic that is available today than ever before.

Although my audio rigs may seem like mega-buck uber high end systems, in the audiophile world, they are just about average.

I'm just glad to see that some of the younger generation is now starting to show an interest in attaining better sound than the iPod & earbuds that have been the norm for most folks under age 35.

Enjoy the listen...

Thanks for the history...

I'm just a few years older than you, though.

My high school rig was a Technics (well maybe Panasonic) something or another, brushed aluminum with a dual cassette deck that opened reeeaaaaal slowly!! And a really cool Technics turntable.

Unlike you, I've just passed in and out of the audio world over my lifetime. Currently speckled trout have been my distraction, but nice to know the high end people are being supported by the likes of you... just in case.

What kind of music do you enjoy?

My usual answer to this is everything from gangsta rap to classical, minus modern day country.

Jam-bands, funk, Latin, soul, and classical get the most play.

Last night, a typical night of listening, consisted of Brahms, Ravel, Iron Maiden, The Black Crowes, Rickie Lee Jones, Zebra, Lee Morgan, Foghat, Hall & Oats, and Elvis Costello...so all over the map.

I am open to just about anything. Tonight will see the Electric Six, Madonna, Gary Clark Jr., Dr. John, The Crusaders, Count Basie, Thomas Dolby and Ratt if time permits.

fun fact...the CEO of SVS is a very nice guy. I know his brother well--he is a partner in a law firm in downtown NOLA.

Their subs are hard to beat at any price point, and their entire speaker line is a good value. They build quality gear.

Good stuff... I try to keep my mind to varying genres, but not always so successful.

My best friend's son is becoming very successful in the video biz in Nashville. I'm so happy for him, and force myself to watch some of his work. Man, that stuff is so repetitive... it's a tough listen.

So the CEO of SVS or his brother is in NOLA?

I am torn between getting dual PBultra 13s or dual FV15HPs for my space....

Bumping since I finally got around to taking a few pictures. Apparently my tv is a little off-center.

Video components:
TV: Sony KDL-46hx729. All network function disabled because it causes random reboots
Computer: Vaio rb34g case and PSU with msi a55 fm1 board and a8-3870k. Cooled with a Hyper 212 Evo, so it's not particularly noticeable. Hauppauge wintv 2250 card on board. Hosts plex server and serves as w8HTPC for recording shows then chopping the files down to size and converting them to mp4. hosts music library, too. BD-R drive + PowerDVD Ultra for dvd/blu Ray viewing. Separate dvd and blu Ray ripping programs at present. Aieesoft for blu Ray and I forget what I'm using for dvd. Both were downloaded while temporarily given away for free, found links at Bitsdujour.
HdHomerun Prime (basic cable, no cablecard because roommate for the present is cheap)
AppleTV (G3)
Components I have access to for adding but are currently either collecting dust or on loan to family/friends: FireTV stick, Chromecast, Roku 2xs, Roku xds, d-link media lounge 510.
Considering adding (long term):
Standalone Blu-Ray player, as PowerDVD kind of blows. Will probably continue ripping and hold off until I can afford nice, dedicated, sources. Would like to go with Oppo here.
Small-footprint HTPC

Audio components:
Receiver: Sony str-dh720
Speakers: B&W Matrix (original series, series 1, or, simply "Matrix" as they were originally named).
Eyeing an Adcom 3 channel amp on Craigslist for ~$400 vs pair of Dayton Audio APA150s vs perusing Audiogon for the first Krell or McIntosh Power Amp (or integrated) to sink low enough for me to deem it too good to pass up. Opinions welcome. 2.0 system would then use the receiver as a volume-controlling preamp (don't particularly think it's a great preamp, but also am really babying my budget and upgrading where necessary first)
Long term: too much room for improvement to even start talking about it.

Network components:
Main router: cisco rv042
2 APs with unique SSIDs (one for each roommate): linksys ea4500, Apple AirPort Extreme (current edition)

Picked up the rv042 off the cheap on Craigslist because I wanted a VPN router. So far it hasn't been fantastic. All components with any real network throughout are hardwired to 1000bit ports on the APs, not the 100bit ports on the gateway. Fortunately, my internet speed is a screaming 5mbps, so it doesn't matter.

And, the most recent edition, a Logitech Harmony 700 universal IR remote.

I've seen this thread multiple times, and every time I'm bummed when it's not people's computers. Some pretty cool stuff in here, though.

Hopeful Doc, nice original Matrix!

Those were fantastic when they first came out and can still hold a candle to their new "diamond studded" grandson.

Amplifier--look at Odyssey amps. They make 2 that are very affordable and they not only measure well, but sound way above their price point and have tons of power. Google Odyssey Amplifiers and go to their page--you can custom build an amp and order direct from them. While I don't own one, a fellow audiophile in our group does, and he is driving a giant VMPS line array speaker system with a pair of Odyssey amps with incredible results.

If you are looking for a used Mac amp and have questions, I can help if you need--I am very familiar with most Mac amps and Pre amps from the last 40 years. Most are great, while some were not so great. You can get away with 60 wpc with the Matrix if you don't listen at really high levels.

You looking for tube or solid state McIntosh?

Krell will all be solid state (transistor). I find the Krell from the last 6 years to be priced a little high. It is great gear, but they are making really high powered amps (400, 600, 900 wpc) and are charging a king's ransom for that power.

Tubes--check out Audio by Van Alstine...classic tube amps that are well built in the USA and been around for 30 years. They are relatively affordable new.

The Oppo 103 is quite possibly the best bargain in all of high end audio. The new version's DAC will decode DSD and DXD files not to mention play every known type of disc and decode every type of audio file---for $500!!--and do it extremely well...
