What is a reasonable time to expect a quote back from contractors on a new construction? I have talked to three contractors that are mid sized and build a pretty good home and only one has submitted a formal fixed price quote and that took four weeks. The other two still have not gotten back to me e...

re: Question for air conditioner guys. - daviddsims
The correct answer would be a manual j and manual s when you had your new unit installed. The 500 sq ft per ton is outdated and is used by HVAC hacks. I know of many homes in the deep south that can go as much as 1000 sq ft per ton but it all depends on the building envelope. ...

re: Any OTers have foam insulation in their house? - daviddsims
How thick is the open cell foam in your attic? I just got a quote for 5.5 inches of open cell which equates to an R value of R20. Is spray foam that much better that it doesn't need to be the same R38 that is recommended for fiberglass?...

re: Foam Insulation Cost - daviddsims
I firmly believe the builders that are using foam that I have talked to aren't doing it because they are making more money, they really think the R value is worth it and the corner bracing is sufficient for our area. Having said that, I am going to take Stout's advice and use all OSB. ...

re: OT A/C Experts - Heat Pump vs. Conventional - daviddsims
If your unit runs all the time during the summer then it is probably sized correctly. Most people think the unit should come on when it is 95 degrees outside and run for 15 minutes. That couldn't be further from the truth. ...
