I don't hate Zardes at all. He can be frustrating when he laced up his steel-toe boots, but I think he will continue to be a valuable player in CONCACAF. However, I would hope we have a superior starting option for major international tourneys (basically only the World Cup and Confederations Cup - if we qualify).

To me, it's not an either/or question.

Zardes both is the best option at times to continue playing the minutes he has
and he has a first touch so inconsistent that someone can make a complete blooper reel using only a couple of matches.

I literally thought last night about how ridiculous the Zardes group think around here is. Same terminology.

I mean, it's natural on boards/Reddit. Everyone parrots the same stuff.

Find a FIFA or kit thread that I've posted in.

Seriously, I'll wait

Who do we replace him with on the wing? Johnson and put Castillo/Villafana (if he ever gets the call) at LB? Or do we put Nagbe there? Put Nagbe central and Bedoya on the wing?

Zusi, Nagbe, Pulisic are all options in terms of the Copa roster.

But I'm down with stability for the short term and rolling with the XI that is working for us right now. In terms of this cycle though, I hope someone steps up and at least gives Jurgy some thoughts about making a change.

Nagbe needs to be in the middle of the park. He definitely COULD play on the RW but if he's gonna be on the field I'd chose him in the middle every time.

its arguable if he should be an automatic selection in the starting 11.. the options are kind of limited..

i do agree that Zardes is a bit of a stop-gap until some other options emerge, which is starting to happen with nagbe, pulisic, arriola, (maybe Gatt, jk ). i also totally think that jurgen hasnt called up lletget strictly because of his instagram.

zardes is the embodiment of all the negative/positive US soccer stereotypes. high work rate. hussles. does the dirty work. sucks in possession. not creative. terrible touch, etc... in a supposed era of "taking the next step," its hard to watch a player like zardes and not feel we should be past this.

hes kinda like watching Ramires when he was with chelsea. he would often do great and terrible things, you knew he added something to the team that was needed on occasion, but could never stop wondering why there isnt a better option than this guy.

so zardes is an easy target and does himself no favors by his inconsistent play.

I agree he's better in the middle, so assuming we go with the the 4-3-3, you can move Nagbe to the middle and shift Bedoya out wide. But we showed these last two games that, while it may be a 4-3-3 on paper, it's really been a 4-4-2

It isn't group think. Have you watched the video of all his shite touches from the last four matches?

Zardes has a high offensive and defensive work rate. That's what he brings to the game. He busts his arse. However, he does not have great vision and his touch is shite. He is quite poor in the final third for an attacker.

Pulisic is twice the player Zardes is on the attacking front. And, that's OK.

What about guys like Finlay or even gyau should he ever get healthy? I honestly think we have a decent crop of guys that can play on the wing, but they are a mix of hurt and untested.

He has one goal and one assist in games against top 50 teams, and the goal came in a friendly. If you want to play him against teams like Guatemala and Haiti, ok. But he doesn't have want it takes against quality teams.

Pulisic was more effective against Ecuador than Zardes was.
