Yeah. Backyard soccer FTMFW.

WC 2006 was when I started following soccer for real. I was in France for the final. I still haven't recovered from the sadness I felt when France lost that thing.

Beckham. I played CM, wore number 7, and took all of our set pieces so he was my idol. Plus I wasn't exceptionally fast and didn't have the best footwork, so it was good to see someone with my skillset (and lack of natural ability) make it to the top.

I think you've confused Beckham with Frank Lampard.

More like 10 years earlier, when I was 9. I actually played a RCM. Is there something I'm missing?

Apparently I mis-spoke. My role on the team was similar to that of Beckham, he was of course the big name in soccer among kids at that time, and I wore number 7. I wasn't some bumbling fool with three left feet, neither was Beckham. My role was to pick out the pass from the midfield and play set pieces, plus I got most of the assists out of the midfield.

At that age, I didn't see the pure speed or athleticism in Beckham that I saw in other elite players.

First one has to be Ridvan Dilmen in the 1980s, when I was basically a toddler in Ankara. After that, Gabriel Batistuta, Jay Jay Okocha, Rustu, Haim Revivo, and to a lesser extent, Tab Ramos.

Because in his prime Beckham was fast, exceptionally skilled on the ball and played as a true right midfielder
