60% of Americans don't know who the vice president is and you want me to believe the majority of people of any race, religion or creed can identify something that hasn't been in common use in a half century?
Just because black people know they are supposed to scream racism when they s much as hear a mention of the flag doesn't mean they know what it looks like.

Most black people DO think it's racist. All I'm saying is that many couldn't pick the confederate flag out of a lineup.

That flag has been used as a race baiting device for so long that I would be shocked if the vast majority of Americans don't instantly (and incorrectly) recognize it as a universal sign of racism and slavery.
You can put politics aside for this discussion. The fact is that people see that flag in a very negative light. This includes a large portion of "southerners".
I personally detest the glorification of the civil war, but I could care less who wants to brag about having a dead relative that participated in that completely avoidable travesty.

I think it is hilarious that when Georgia had to change their state flag they changed it to look EXACTLY like the first official Confederate flag, except it has their state symbol and 13 stars in the blue field instead of the seven in a ring like the first Confederate flag had.

Why don't they just use a different confederate flag? Seems like they want the response they know they'll get.

I live in the south and can honestly say I see it maybe once a month. It certainly never makes it onto TV.
I can easily see how most people outside of the south could go their whole lives without seeing it. Just because people know about it doesn't mean they recognize it, anymore than most people could recognize the Greek flag.

Within living memory that flag was used as a white supremacist symbol in the South. It is not so much that it was carried into battle in 1864; it is what it stood for post-Reconstruction until as late as the 1970's. Black Americans do not take it lightly, nor should they. They know what it meant in the South from 1880 to 1980. (And, I could probably have two of those license plates myself because of my ancestors.)

I have seen it less and less as the years have gone on. I had one as a kid, most of my buddies did as well. For us it was more a southern pride or cultural symbol. I never even thought about black people when I saw one. Once I left the south, I saw how non-southerners really felt about These days I rarely see them. I still hear talk about it, and it is almost always negative. Associated with slavery of course.

Well I disagree here. It is still taught in schools to be a symbol of slavery and oppression. Many schools these days prohibit it to be displayed on clothes and on vehicles, even those schools outside of the traditional south. I am not aware of any polls that cite how recognizable it is, but I would guess it is much higher than 60% in most parts of the country.

This may just be a Texas thing...I mean, isn't illegal to have any flag displayed other than the Texas flag over there?
But seriously, I live in South Louisiana and in one form or another that flag can be seen many many times a week without much effort. You'd mostly be talking about various shitty license plates or bumper stickers or car/truck adornment of one form or another...but it's still quite visible.

These plates will be bought by the same idiots who were shocked that their car would be vandalized for having a Bush, or a McCain, or a anti-Obama bumper sticker on it. They are asking to get keyed.
