The BART (San Francisco) Strike

For those of you that may be unaware, workers for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) went on strike this week. The unions reached an agreement with management to return in a limited capacity and postpone continuing the strike for another month.

The average BART worker makes $82K a year and pays a monthly flat fee of $90 for health coverage. I am unaware of the pension plans but I would imagine they are fairly generous.

Management is offering 8% salary increase spread over the next four years and reducing the amount of employee contribution for pension and health benefits that it initially requested.

Unions say they want 15% salary increase spread over the next three years and no increase in the amount of employee contribution for pension and health benefits or they walk.

Thoughts?

frick the unions... Seriously, frick them.

Its too bad the city probably can't bring in non-union workers, because I guarantee they could find plenty of people in cali who are unemployed and willing to work for what they currently make, or less.

What do you expect the poli board to think?

I hardly ever post on the Poli Board or read it...does it tend to lean toward one end of the political spectrum?

In San Francisco? The most expensive city in the country next to NYC? Maybe.

82k would not go nearly as far in San Fran as it would in Auburn, Alabama. Think about it for a sec.

That appears to be the equivalent to a $50K per year job in Alabama or Georgia LINK. That, plus healthcare, plus pension? Yeah, that's Bangladesh garment worker kinda shite......

Absolutely. But yet again, we've got a another union for non-skilled labor pushing wages outside of what the market would dictate.

Thought about it... Its not skilled labor, its bus drivers and shite.

And I'd imagine 82k in San Fran equated to around 60k in almost all other cities.

Can't blame the Union for fighting for the interests of the common working man.

How big are the salaries and benefits of the "big bosses"?

While true, They also have an extremely sweet deal with healthcare and pension..and I am willing to bet that most dont even live in San Fran proper.
