Doesn't that already happen? Not every Parish has the same sales tax.

Yes, but Jindal is talking about trading off state income tax with simply an increase in state sales taxes. Therefore, there's no real reform from the budget end of things. We will still have all the vote-buying for local projects that state government shouldn't be funding in the first place.

I'd rather state government take in less revenue, but also fund less local stuff, and have the local governments take in what they need for their own needs/wants/desires.

Why should someone in Calcasieu Parish send tax dollars to Baton Rouge to pay for a ballpark in Monroe? Let Monroe residents pay for it.

But property taxes are much higher than ours. Jindal's plan seems to leave property taxes at current levels

I thought one of the plans had them moving the homestead expt. starting point up $25K. It would still be a $75K expt. but would cover the 25-100K range.

I like the idea of everyone paying a small amount of property tax for essentials (police, garbage, sewer, fire, etc.) and then exempting the property taxes up to a certain amount.

I like your concept, not necessarily the numbers but the concept.

Rep. Kevin Pearson filed a piece of legislation similar to that in 2009 or 2010 I think. Never got out of committee.

Next year's budget gap grows to nearly $1.2 billion

The board also dropped its expectations for next year's revenue by $207 million. Combined with an already expected budget shortfall announced last month, that means the administration and lawmakers will have to close a nearly $1.2 billion gap when they get to work on the budget.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Fannin, D-Jonesboro, gave a grim assessment of the situation after Thursday's meeting and said he saw no sign that either sales tax or income tax revenue would be improving in the near future.

"If we are creating a lot of jobs, the only thing I can conclude is that those jobs aren't paying what the previous jobs were paying," Fannin said, noting that income and sales tax revenue wasn't increasing in the face of improving unemployment numbers and recent announcements of new businesses coming into the state.

Asked whether there was any place in the budget that could absorb the cuts, Fannin said, "I don't know if there was any fat left two or three years ago. But that didn't stop us from cutting based on the Revenue Estimating Conference forecast."

And the natural gas boom means Louisiana is supposed to be rocking. Meanwhile, our roads are going to shite yet again.

Louisiana roads have always been shite. It's part of our state's culture now.

"Ridiculous pensions of retired state workers": you really have no clue what you are talking bout. Most state workers make a lot less than the public sector, by choice to a certain extent, but in return they do have decently good benefits. They do not pay Social Security, so how do you suggest a retired employee live for the last 20-30 yrs of his/her life?
