My only sibling died of an opioid overdose. He was a high-functioning addict, a really good man, a hearty soul, the loudest laugh in the room. I would tell you to approach addiction from a NON-IDEOLOGICAL perspective. Legalizing this, or making this illegal is totally beside the point. The point is how do we help addicts in an effective manner.IMHO, We don't need agendas, we need to focus on what helps addicts kick it and what doesn't. Don't worry about pissing anybody off or entertaining the arguments of people that are happy addicts die.

Not to derail thread, but I live in baldwin county. The largest county in the state, and one of the top ten fastest growing counties in the nation. Over 50% of our school funding goes to Montgomery to get reallocated, so I don't agree with you. At all.

By population or landmass?

What do you think?

I have taken this and added it to my initial statement.
Thank you.

Since the landmass isn't growing, one would assume population. That is a total lie.
Jefferson Co still has Baldwin beat by 30%.

Jefferson, mobile, Montgomery, and Madison are all bigger... even Shelby is bigger o.O

Baldwin County is the largest landmass county in the state.
Baldwin County also happens to be one of the top 10 most growing counties in the nation:
Baldwin County fastest growing in the state
quote:
our thousand people moved to Baldwin County last year bumping the county population to over 200 thousand. “Foley, Fairhope and the Daphne metro areas are kind of where we’re seeing significant growth in particular,” says county commissioner Chris Elliott. Those numbers reflected in new housing construction, the amount of traffic, but to keep up with the growth Elliott says the key is economic diversity. “We have a great tourism industry in the county but one of the things I’m focused on is diversifying our economy. So, if there is another hurricane, if there is another oil spill or something like that, we don’t have the catastrophic stop in county revenues and in the overall economy in Baldwin County.” Whether a long-time resident or a newcomer, “I like it over here because of the water and the people over here are really nice,” says newcomer Shelia Turner. Baldwin County seems to be the place to be. The census numbers are from July of 2014 to July 2015. Madison and Lee counties also showed significant growth during the same period.

Gotta get these people out of the shadows. There will always be addiction, but the shadowy underworld of abuse causes most of the problems.

That's something Oregon has done successfully. Taken the stigma away.

You're too stupid to be on this council.

You're the gump.
I'm the transplant on the committee.

That's not how your school funding works at all. The ETF is funded by state level taxes. Distribution is made by student. If you feel you're getting the shaft there, I challenge you to compare funding and facilities in your Baldwin County schools to the schools attended by 30,000 impoverished black children in the Black Belt counties.
The state doesn't get any portion of locality property taxes earmarked for local education.

I lost my son to this. He hit rock bottom and never recovered. I have my own thoughts on this subject. We must focus on prevention and deterrence.. Stopping it from happening in the first place.
ZERO tolerance for the financiers transporters and sellers. Make the penalties so high they will think twice. Open these people to civil suits where everything they have can be taken away from them and given as restitution to the injured parties. Increase the penalties , including death for the major players and carry out the sentences.
Shut down the border and use whatever force is necessary to stop the cartels. Including the US Military. Wipe them OUT. We have the power, all that is needed is the will.
To those that do become addicts, do what we can to save them. But the best course is for it never to happen in the first place.

Thanks for undertaking this challenge. I'm in a chronic pain support group and many members have opiod addictions provided for by their doctors. A few have gotten off opiods using both marijuana and kratom but it's more complicated than that with the brain and neurological changes that take place. There's a lot of new research into pain pathways that will be vital to alleviating addictions. Medical marijuana and CBD's do a good job as studies have shown, www.medicalxpress.com, in reducing opiod use but also in reducing other prescription drug use, BP meds, anti-anxiety and anti-depressants. There again it comes back to brain chemistry and it can be bad for some. In a confounding move the DEA has classified CBD's as a schedule 1. You think the DEA and the pharmaceutical companies care about the addiction problem. It's going to take national legislation. Good luck at the state level.

It is certainly a complicated issue.
I will update this thread as warranted by our progress.
I fully understand the pain and harm that addiction has done to our nation, and I hope to take that understanding to the committee.
