The Federal Communications Commission is cracking open the net neutrality debate again with a proposal to undo the 2015 rules that implemented net neutrality with Title II classification.

quote:

His proposal will reclassify internet providers as Title I information services, end rules that allow the commission to evolve the rules to fit future practices, and open questions about what to do with the key no blocking and throttling rules that were implemented in 2015.

quote:

The Internet Association, a group that represents more than 40 top internet companies, including Google, Facebook, and Netflix, said there was no reason to change the rules. “The current FCC net neutrality rules are working and these consumer protections should not be changed,” said the group’s CEO, Michael Beckerman. “Consumers pay for access to the entire internet free from blocking, throttling, or paid prioritization.”

If you thought people got pissed over government fricking with their healthcare, wait until you see people get pissed when government fricks with their entertainment.

Donald Trump is stepping into a minefield if he really does go after Net Neutrality and he will deserve the backlash for it.

It's a sad day in American when the federal government not getting between a company and their customers is considered interfering.

You people truly have brain disorders.

I honestly don't understand this issue at all. Is there a 5 minute YouTube video that sums it up? Or an article written from a centrist / libertarian point of view?

True or false - your ISP should have full legal authority to block your access to any website at their own discretion, devoid of any legitimate reason.

Since I have to go through this every fricking time, here goes nothing.

ISP have a created a patchwork of state and local laws which distort and destroy the free market for internet service. These big government policies at the state and local level have hugely benefited the ISPs at the cost of the customer.

Net neutrality is a regulation, which is generally a bad thing is not necessarily bad where there is no free market to destroy in the first place.

I'm confident if an ISP did that indiscriminately the market would punish them by customers switching to other ISP's.

Agreed....but getting rid of gross overstepping govt regulation can't hurt that and other forms of infrastructure development as well. There are things out there that could potentially be better and maybe cheaper than nationwide fiber....Give me my mesh network

In a free market, you would have a point. However, ISPs are so intertwined with government that taking away net neutrality gives them exclusive access to frick consumers over. As an American, you have no recourse because the market has such high barriers to entrance.

Depends on if it is in their contract that they may do so.

I know you're trying to ask if there should be a law preventing them from doing so though, and the answer is no. If Cox Cable says "hey we are blocking all CNN related websites from our servers" who do those servers fricking belong to? Oh that's right Cox.

Now if they have a contract that says they won't do so ,and they violate the contract. then they have another problem entirely.

This is just like a few weeks ago the fat **** doctor on United. That plane belongs to United, they tell you to get off, get the frick off, it's THEIR plane and they have a contract that says "we can remove you from the plane for yada yada yada"

It's almost like we don't even respect property rights in this country any more.

Most Americans have little to no choice of ISP. That is not a free market.
