The media started the entire fake news phenomenon to shut down their alternative media rivals that were kicking their arse in the market.
It has been turned on them, because it was a ridiculous concept to begin with, and now they want it to be gone.
Lesson: Don't play fast and loose with the facts, or shade everything to your side, and then call other people fake news. It will likely blow up in your face.

What? No they didn't. Investigative reporters traced fake news stories posted on Facebook to Macedonia, of all places. A bunch of damn teenagers in Macedonia were making up news stories, posting them on Facebook and making bank on the ad revenue. It was legitimate thing until idiots started labeling any article they didn't agree with fake news.

That may be true, but you know exactly why the whole "fake news" thing became a meme in this election, pushed hard by CNN. They thought they would get to decide what "fake news" meant.
