About every 3/4 months a guy drives up the driveway with some shrimp to sell which is great. The shrimp are about 20 per pound. He weighs them with the heads; then, deheads them for me. He charges $3.50 per pound. Is this a good price?

Do you get to keep the heads?

Keep the heads and make stock. I freeze them in containers of water with the heads on for bbq shrimp and it works fine.

Hell yeah, I keep the heads and make stock. I actually pulled out a pack of shrimp and stock just now.

seems to be a good deal. however, I was told by some salt water coonasses from morgan city to never de-head your shrimp until it's time to cook them. and.....boil them with the heads on like crawfish. something about the fat in their heads or some shite like that.

Where's this shrimp guy? I wanna buy some

If you are gonna freeze them you must de-head first. If your gonna cook them soon that's fine

You can freeze with the heads on, it just takes up more freezer space, where do you think all the head on shrimp at the market come from? Frozen

I get them in Hackberry from $2-4 per pound. Depends on the size and how many they have on hand.

I'm not trolling you. I just really do not know what the going rate for shrimp are bc I have never bought them in a seafood market. I or someone in the family has just always had a shrimp guy.
And Lee, I don't know where this guy is from or where he comes from. He knows my neighbors and they sent him over a couple off years ago, now he just shows up.

When I read "20 per pound" I was reading $20 and not count and I was
$3.50 rocks!

At that price & time of year, you're almost certainly buying previously frozen, defrosted shrimp. Nothing wrong with that, as the big boats have on-board IQF operations...so they're "fresh frozen"
Can't wait for May brown shrimp season to open; that's when I stock my freezer.

How do you freeze them? I've always frozen my shrimp in water. I've tried the vac seal with them (no heads), but not been as pleased as I thought I would be. Freezing in water takes up space, but the result has always been excellent, head on or off. On occasion, I've vac sealed peeled fresh shrimp and the result is fine, but I don't freeze large amounts of peeled very often.

for reference, here in Denver I pay $10 a pound on sale for frozen 26-30 count
