Louisiana Running Company on Canal St in NOLA will fit you and set you up. Nicest people around and great locally owned company. Can't say enough good things about them. I wear brooks, by the way.

Stupid. Go to a running store and have someone watch you jog. The good sales people know how to analyze your form i.e. over pronation, heel strike, etc....they will suggest shoes based on that. You can't go by what I wear or the next person wears. You will be unique....for a change.

Go to the brand name outlet store.
These types of places will usually get the less desirable shoes due to the sheer volume that's needed to fill order.
I do this. IDK if I'm running in "last year's colors"... As long as there isn't a major leap forward in a shoe technology that benefits me - I'll get something from the year prior that's waaaaay up the line from what I would get paying the same price for brand new.

Get fitted. Most running stores do it, New Balance also does it. I got fitted in a pair of Mizunos that I love.

Every person is different
I'm a new balance guy. Durable and have never let me down.
What I do is go by high end shoe place, have them analyze my feet and recommend two or three pairs
I write them down and go online and buy them for much less. lol
Two weeks ago went by new balance store, loved theses new shoes that were 119.99 in store. Found them on east bay for $79.99 and free shipping. Two days later in my hands

Fwiw, I had flat feet and ran in what I was told I needed for years, motion control shoes. Then I saw the light.
I almost bought motion control shoes as my first running shoes but decided not to because they were way to stiff. I'm tall and slender and feel I didn't need that. After doing research I bought a pair of Saucony Guides that have lightweight stability and haven't looked back

You just have to find what works for you. Go get fitted at a running store. That's the best advice. I'm a Brooks guy myself. All they make is running shoes and I've been in the Adriniline, Ghost and Launch and liked them all. New Balance makes good racing flats and minimalist shoes if that's your thing. Asics are good, but they don't seem to last that long IMO.

Didn't read any reply BUT don't ask people ... your feet are not their feet. Go to a local running store and make sure that you get the right shoe for your foot. They'll check your feet out and give you the best options for you and then you can whittle down to what you like from there.
I went from Brooks (almost 3 years) to Mizuno with a wee bit of stability per the PT suggestion. HATED THEM. Gave it the 30 days to try though and ended up in On Clouds which I ran 8.5 miles in straight out of the box and really liked them.
Good luck!

Go to a store that specializes in running like Varsity Running or Fleet Feet and get fitted. I promise you it's the best way, it's best money I have ever spent.

I always thought Saucony made good shoes for the price FWIW.

Getting fitted for good inserts for my high arch was the best thing I have done, but I usually run in New Balance or Brooks.

I got some good input from some avid runners the other day saying that Asics, Brooks, and New Balance.
Avoid the major brands like Nike.

I hated my Hokas. Returned them bastards.
I run in Kinvaras but I am about to order some Altra Trail shoes to switch it up.
What Ultra are you running tomorrow?

Will barefoot/minimalist running help with stubborn calf development?
I don't have a cankle problem, but have never been able to develop a defined inner calf with weight training.

I'm not sure you meant to reply to me. I don't have Ultras. I actually have some Nike Trail Runner shoes. Nike's work for me because of the way I run which is somewhat an overstride where i use the outside of my feet more than a balanced stride. If that makes sense

Recommending brands of shoes is about as useless as recommending Makes of cars.
I can suggest a Ford, but whether or not I'm talking about a Mustang, F250, Focus or Escape makes the difference and is what matters when meeting your specific needs.
In summary, ignore and specific shoe recommendations made in this thread and go find what type of shoe you need, then forget the brand but try a few models (neutral, stability, etc) of differenr brands and see what one feels the best.
How to do a "foot test" yourself
I run in three different brands of shoes that are all different based on what/where I am running.
Brooks Launch (10mm drop) are my trainers
Asics Gel Lyte 33's (4 mm drop) are my tempo and race up to 13.1 shoes
Saucony A5 (o mm drop) are my speed/track/race shoe
